The Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a government-backed, long-term savings scheme with a 15-year tenure (extendable afterward in blocks of five years), an interest rate set and revised quarterly by the government, and full EEE tax treatment - your contribution, the interest earned, and the maturity amount are all exempt from tax. Annual contributions are capped at ₹1.5 lakh per financial year.
This calculator compounds your chosen yearly or monthly contribution at the prevailing interest rate to project the maturity value at the end of the 15-year term (or an extended period, if you plan to continue). Because interest is compounded annually and applied to the lowest balance between the 5th and last day of each month, contributing early in the financial year - rather than at the last minute in March - meaningfully improves the actual return you earn.
Since the PPF rate is reviewed every quarter rather than fixed for the full 15 years, the calculator's projection assumes today's rate holds constant, so treat the output as a reasonable estimate rather than an exact figure. PPF is best thought of as the safe, tax-efficient anchor of a portfolio rather than its wealth-creation engine - most long-term investors pair it with market-linked instruments for the growth their goals need.
